Why I Hand My Husband My Camera by Jen Arron

Ever notice when you look back through your photos that you’re rarely in them? Often we mothers are the ones taking most of the photos. It’s partly because we want to freeze time & remember how crazy cute our children are. It's also because we tend to be with our kids more than anyone else.

As a photographer myself, this is my constant conundrum - I have so many pictures of my life, the people I love, the places I've traveled to. But I’m hardly ever in any of these pictures. It’s not that it really bothers me immediately, but as time passes on and these pictures act as little portals for my memories, I want to be IN them! Hey - I was there too!

It has to be said here, that my husband is an amazing person. And he’s arty & talented too (gush gush). Over the years he’s become really good at taking pictures (by proximity to me, it was bound to happen right!?). He takes lovely images of our son when they’re spending time together. So between the two of us we have tons of great shots of our kid. It’s me who takes pictures of the two of them, father and son. And so, I have to make a conscious effort to hand my husband my camera (or anyone close by if need be).

It’s a wonderful feeling to look at the photos of me with my son over the years. But the real reason I make sure I’m in our family photos, is for him. It’s so he can always look through our photos and see both of his parents loving him up and doing life together. It’s for his memories & reflections, just as much as it is for mine.

Whether it’s your camera or your phone, please mamas, I encourage you to hand it over! You’ll be so happy you did. I promise.

I think you are beautiful by Jen Arron

I felt like a giant sloth after I gave birth. It's true! I literally looked down and wondered "whose body is that?" Surely it wasn't mine. I didn't recognize myself. I was unable to see what I really looked like through all the emotions, the hormones, the sleep deprivation, the deep deep love.

Well, here is how I actually looked: (thank you to my cousin Lynda for taking this picture)

In retrospect, I can see how lovely I was with my new baby.

So. This is my reminder to you, mother of a very fresh baby:

I SEE YOU.

I see the love you're experiencing. I see the light radiating from you. I see it in your eyes. And in your heart.

It is truly beautiful.

helping you remember by Jen Arron

I have this thing where I love to be needed. More than that, I love being helpful. Seriously, I thrive when I can be supportive. I've come to embrace this part of my personality. It helps me while I'm shooting too. For example, I think about what I would want to come away with if I hired a photographer to capture my family. I would want someone to give me images of my family in the amazing ways I see them everyday in my life.

When I go into a house for a Family Shoot, my goal is to create pictures for the parents of their kids, the way they see them all the time. I want to help parents hold onto this time in their life. To be able to look at these images later in life and remember how it felt, how small the kids were, how much everyone loved each other, how sometimes children play behind the couch, how the baby looks in that living room light...

It makes me feel good to know I'm part of helping my family clients remember these times.

It's time to shake it up with a photoshoot! by Jen Arron

When my son was about 8 months old, I felt the need to change up the days a little. But how? Up to this point, the days were blending into one another in a swirl of naps, playtime, feedings, bottles, diaper changes, etc. It felt like my husband and I were in a bit of a monotonous vortex with our son, just the 3 of us. (Don't get me wrong, we LOVE our kid, but c'mon, your ENTIRE life is broken up into 90 minute windows of time for like months on end...)

I'm wondering if this might be a universal truth for parents with an 8 month old? It just may be the perfect reason to break things up with a Family Photoshoot! I approached this shoot (below) with the intention of giving Kristen & Dan a little reprieve from the everyday.

That's the cool thing about being a photographer and a mother at the same time. There are just so many ways I can now relate to my family clients. I really feel like I bring this sense of compassion with me on every shoot.

Respect for the Mama's by Jen Arron

When I look back on the time my son was just born, it's a blur of sheer emotion & love. At the same time there was a lot of panic and, let's face it, borderline insanity - that's how I felt. I'm just going to say the thing you're not supposed to say: Becoming a mother didn't come naturally to me. I mean, the love I felt was enormous, but the actual 'mothering' part took a lot of getting used to.

So when I go to photograph a family who's just had their 3rd child, I am almost always blown away by how calm and patient the parents are. This was the case at Dani & Avi's house last week. Imagine 3 kids under 4 years old. Like wait - THREE KIDS UNDER FOUR YEARS OLD!!!!

I learned so much about patience from Dani's mothering style (which was true from our very first shoot with their eldest child). She was so composed and handled all the action with incredible grace. When I sit back and reflect, I am so grateful I get to be around other mothers in this way. Surely their wisdom has had some effect on me as I parent my son. Let's hope so!
